“I’d love to fossilise the collection in a more interesting way,” Hannah Smith told me. “Shows can be limiting in how they communicate a concept — and not everyone can experience them in person.”

With that in mind, I chose to display The Gentle Frame in a locked box. The cutouts resemble wrought iron gates — a motif threaded throughout

Smith's collection.

Each photograph is printed on Hahnemühle Bamboo paper and housed inside the box — a reflection of the coexistence of restriction and support, hyper-visibility and erasure, and access and defence that, at times, shape the disabled experience.
